Pongola Game Reserve

Pongola Game Reserve

Product Description

Few exclusive yet affordable private getaways combine the scenic variety of bushveld, mountains, major water bodies and a range of leisure activities that make the best of all the natural features. This combination, an abundance of space and the results of a “light footprint” development philosophy are key ingredients of the special experience offered by Pongola Game Reserve, Zululand, Northern KwaZulu Natal.

The reserve extends over part of the original area that, on 13th June 1894, was proclaimed as the Pongola Game Reserve by Paul Kruger, President of the old Transvaal Republic, as the first proclaimed Game Reserve in Africa. The business is owned and managed by the Landman family whose ancestors arrived in the Cape in 1744.

Pongola Game Reserve’s business is Wildlife Ranching and Ecotourism and is a prime example of successful management in these industries.

The Pongola River meanders through the reserve before entering the Pongolapoort Dam, also known as Lake Jozini. It provides a bush environment unique for a South African bushveld destination. Boat cruises, birding, game drives, game walks, rhino tracking and tiger fishing (the southern-most limit of the natural occurrence of this species) are among the main activities. The reserve offers 2 fully catered Lodges and 5 self-catering camps.

The area is home to many typical plains game species, four of the Big 5 (excluding lion), Hippopotamus and crocodile. It is also a birding “hotspot”, with over 350 species so far been recorded.

The reserve is situated 450km from Johannesburg and 350km from Durban.
